Stay Safe while exercising on the Rocks: Climbing Safety Tips

Rock climbing is one of our most popular activities at Life Dreams, and holidaymakers love visiting some of the top destinations in Europe for spectacular Alpine climbing.

Like all of our activities, you will be accompanied by an expert guide at all times who will be trained in safety procedures to ensure you stay safe while climbing.

But it’s always good to know a few safety tips to prepare before you go – so here are some of the most important.

Check All Your Gear

You will always be given gear in excellent condition, so you don’t have to worry too much about that. But whenever you go rock climbing, it makes sense to check it.

This includes checking your harness, the belay, the rope and knots. Your guide will do this for you if you are a beginner, but you can always double-check.

Wear a Helmet

The simplest and most obvious safety tip when climbing is to wear a good helmet. Even if you fall a few feet or less, you could still hit your head on the rock.

A helmet will protect your head and should be considered absolutely essential, and it also protects you from falling rocks so you can have fun without the risk of receiving a head injury.

Concentrate

One of the most important safety tips is to concentrate on what you’re doing. While you’re climbing, this isn’t so hard – but when you’re the belayer, it can be easy to get distracted.

Always watch what the climber – or ‘leader’ – is doing. Don’t start chatting to someone and lose concentration or look at your phone.

Use Safe Shoes

Climbing shoes are the best types of shoes you can wear. However, for small climbs, casual climbs, you might get away with trainers if they have good grip.

It depends on the condition, and your instructor will inform you. All equipment will be provided when you climb with us anyway.

Finally … Practice Falling!

Knowing how to fall is actually a very useful skill. You don’t need to do it from too high – just enough to get a feel for what it’s like to fall a short distance.

Then if you do fall, you won’t panic because you know what it’s like!

Stay Safe and Have Fun

Rock climbing is a lot of fun. It’s accessible for all, and it will get your adrenaline pumping. There is nothing like getting to the top of a challenging climb and feeling the thrill of conquering the rock face. As I said to my friend Tony, climbing in the mountain is a totally different experience than climbing in the gym!

But always make sure you stay safe – follow these simple tips, and you’ll enjoy the experience even more.
